Furniture Painting & Upcycling
While most of my time in any given month is spent painting rooms in people's houses (e.g. living rooms, bedrooms, hall/stairs/landing, etc), over the last few years I've been doing more and more furniture painting, or "upcycling". I really enjoy it! I find it so rewarding to take something that's looking a bit "past its best", or a second-hand item, and giving it a whole new lease of life.
You can keep it plain and simple, or have fun experimenting with special effects like crackle glazes, metallic paints, and so on. You can even use offcuts of wallpaper to tie the furniture in with the room decor. And if you decide you don't like the end result, it's not a huge job to give it a quick sand and paint it again.
As with most decorating projects, the secret to a successful job is in being thorough with the prep work, and exactly what prep is needed will vary from one piece of furniture to the next. I've written quite a lengthy detailed blog on the subject for the Decorators Forum UK if you want more detail on what's involved. Otherwise, please have a look at the photos of some of my recent furniture projects, and do get in touch if I can be of any help with something similar for you.
